Top 10 Foods That Cause Cancer

In recent decades, more people have begun to consume processed foods and have a decrease of fruits and vegetables in their diet. Last year alone almost 1.5 million people were diagnosed with some type of cancer — maybe it’s time we take a closer look at what we are actually eating.

Here’s a list of the top 10 cancer causing foods that you eat every day:

1. Refined White Flour

White flour is commonly found in pastas, breads, and baked goods. When white flour is “refined” it destroys its natural nutrients and mills no longer wait patiently for their flour to whiten – instead they bleach their flour with a chemical called chlorine gas.

The Environmental Protection Agency says that chlorine gas can be lethal if inhaled in large quantities. In World War I German troops used chlorine gas as chemical warfare against the Russian troops!

White refine flour also has a high glycemic rate that quickly raises your insulin and blood sugar levels which causes diabetes and helps directly feed cancerous tumors.

2. Microwave Popcorn

Although microwave popcorn may seem like a harmless snack to eat, it contains a variety of different chemicals that are harmful to the body. PFOA, also known as perfluorooctanoic acid, is one of the main ingredients and is known as a carcinogen. The artificial butter in the popcorn also contains diacetyl, which is linked to a rare type of lung disease when it’s inhaled. It commonly develops in the workers of microwave popcorn factories and can only be treated with a lung transplant.

The lining on microwave popcorn bags can also pose as a health threat due to the chemical PFOA. This is one of the components in Teflon and pizza boxes. It is considered to be a likely carcinogen that can lead to cancer.

Although health experts recommend avoiding microwave popcorn completely, there are healthier versions of it that can be made, using a “Whirly-Pop” stovetop popcorn popper which includes airing the popcorn out and adding your own seasonings or flavors.

3. Hydrogenated Oils

Hydrogenated oils (vegetable oil) contain trans fats — which is considered by most doctors to be the worst type of fat you can eat. The vegetable oils must be chemically removed from their original source and are frequently deodorized and colored to look more appealing to the consumer.

All hydrogenated oils contain high levels of Omega-6 fatty acids that can lead to heart disease, increase the risk of skin cancer and other various cancers. Try and avoid hydrogenated oil by using olive oil, peanut, canola, or coconut as a healthier option. Organic butter is also a better option as well.

4. Fried Potato Chips

Yes, we all love these quick and easy treats. However, potato chips are loaded in both calories and fat! They also have high amounts of sodium which can cause high blood pressure and tons of trans-fats that can cause high cholesterol.

Fried potato chips also contain artificial flavors, colors and preservatives and are fried which causes them to create acrylamide, a known carcinogen found in cigarettes — Yuk!

There are many healthy alternatives that you can get instead like: banana chips, apple crisps, veggie chips, baked chips, or even tortilla chips.

5. Processed Meats

Hot dogs, pepperoni, corned beef, bacon, ham, beef jerky and lunch meat are all popular staples in the American diet but can be harmful to the health because of how they’re processed. They are all known to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67 percent, according to a study by the University of Hawaii. Nitrate is one of the most dangerous ingredients in processed meat, which is linked to cancer, which the FDA has been trying to ban since the 1970s.

6. Alcohol (Booze)

Yea, I know most people won’t like this because they refer to all those studies that say a glass of wine is good for your heart. However, that is meant for only 1 glass a day!

The facts don’t lie — Alcohol is now the second leading cause of cancer, right behind tobacco. American Journal of Public Health shows there are around 20,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. every year. They also state that 3.5% of all cancer-related deaths are caused by alcohol consumption — Yikes!

The American Cancer Society states that excessive drinking is known to cause:

  • Liver cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Mouth cancer
  • Throat cancer
  • Voice box cancer
  • Esophagus cancer
  • Colon and Rectum cancer
  • Increase risk for pancreatic cancer
  • strokes, heart failure and even sudden death.

7. Canned Goods

Most cans are lined with a chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA which has been shown to genetically alter the brain cells of rats. Your best bet would be to use fresh or frozen vegetables that have no added ingredients or to use “BPA-Free Brands” for all your canned goods.

8. Refined Sugar

The biggest cancer causing food is high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and other refined sugars. You have to even watch out for brown sugar because it is cleverly disguised white sugar that adds the “removed molasses” back in for added color and flavor. In 1931 Otto Warburg first discovered that cancers and tumors both use sugars to  feed themselves and increase their size. Cancer cells prefer high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) because they can quickly and easily metabolized so they can rapidly grow. Cut the sugar to stop feeding the cancer.

9. Farmed Fish

Many people make the mistake of consuming farmed fish when trying to eat healthy—especially tilapia! These farmed fish contain less healthy omega-3’s and also includes flame retardants, antibiotics, pesticides and other know carcinogens. Wild fish is a healthier option that will actually benefit the body and protect it from various illnesses or diseases

10. Soda Pop

Soda contains refined sugar, which is known to spike your insulin levels quickly and is a genetically modified product. Cancers must have a sweet tooth because refined sugars and fructose found in sodas directly feed cancer cells. Fructose contains caramel color and is considered to be a carcinogen. Not only does this acidify the body, but it causes cancers to multiply at a faster rate.

Diet sodas are just as deadly because of the artificial sweeteners they use. Not to mention they do nothing to help diabetics.  Also the aspartame found in these artificial sweeteners has been found to “sometimes” cause convulsions which has been mistaken for an insulin reaction. A recent study has proven aspartame increases the risk of heart disease and strokes.

After watching this video my view of coke will never be the same and I still wouldn’t drink coke zero or anything “diet”. Instead I would drink some home made Texas ice tea!

On the boiled coke experiment, the “stuff” in the new coke I definitely would not want in my body. I tend to think (and practice) that regular Coke isn’t as bad for you than the artificial sweeteners in diet beverages

Hey Rolf, Thanks for your comment 🙂 Yea, I love Coke and Dr. Pepper too but after seeing and reading more about all the sugar that is loaded into these colas, I try and only drink these on special occasions — plus I want to set a good example for my kids 🙂

Over the last few years I have winged myself off of colas by making my own ice tea and using an organic Agave as a sweetener. Agave sweetneners don’t spike your blood like normal sugar sweeteners — this is also a good alternative for kids that have Attention Deficit “Hyperactivity” Disorder (ADHD).
