Every year, there are 100,000 - 300,000 deaths related to venous thromboembolism (VTE). VTE refers to two blood clotting conditions: deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
DVT is when a blood clot forms in a person's arm, leg or groin. PE occurs when a clot forms and lodges itself in the lungs. Research shows that there are 10 million occurrences of VTE every year.
According to a 2015 survey, 68% of those surveyed were aware of thrombosis and only 45% knew that blood clots could be prevented. In fact, there is medication available today that can treat VTE and PE.
Xarelto can treat these conditions and help prevent blood clots.

What Is Xarelto 15 mg?
Xarelto 15 mg is a blood thinner. The medical term is anticoagulant. Cogaluate means “to clot.”
Blood thinners don’t actually thin your blood. What they do is prevent clots by disrupting the coagulation process.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved Xarelto in 2011. It was first approved to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and to prevent pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery.
A person develops DVT when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. Both the lower leg and thigh are common places for DVT to develop.
DVT may lead to a blood clot in a sufferer’s lung, which is what pulmonary embolism is. The CDC estimates DVT/PE affects up to 900,000 people in the U.S. every year.
Between 60,000-100,000 die as a result every year. Sudden death is the first symptom in 25% of people who have PE.
Not long after receiving FDA approval for treating DVT and PE, Xarelto was also approved to treat AFib.
How Does Xarelto Work?
You now what Xarelto is, but you should also know how it works.
Up to six million people are currently living in the U.S. with AFib. That’s six million people who are at an increased risk of stroke.
While fewer people live with DVT/PE and AFib being easy to diagnose, Xarelto is now widely associated with AFib.
AFib sufferers can develop a blood clot in their heart. This clot travels to their brain, resulting in a stroke. This works in the same way a blood clot travels from the leg to the lung in people with DVT/PE.
Blood thinners inhibit the protein called Factor Xa. This protein is what helps blood clots form.
AFib sufferers are at an increased risk because their atria (upper chamber of the heart) doesn’t fully contract. Instead, it “quivers” which doesn’t push all the blood through the heart.
The remaining blood starts to pool. When blood pools, clots can form. The clot can break free from the atria and travel to the brain.
Hence, causing a stroke.
Doctors prescribe blood thinners to people living with AFib to prevent this from happening. Xarelto is one of the most popular anticoagulants on the market.
Does Xarelto Have Side Effects?
All blood thinners have some side effects. It’s important to note that not everyone experiences these, though.
- Bleeding gums
- Muscle weakness
- Bloody/discolored urine or feces
- Excess/prolonged bleeding from a cut
- Heavier than normal menstrual periods
You may have read that anticoagulants cause hair loss. This is true for traditional blood thinners like Warfarin.
Researchers haven’t found that Xarelto and it’s newer, blood-thinning competitors cause hair loss.
However, there is a long list of medications you should not take if you’re on Xarelto 15 mg. As such, you must inform your doctor of all medicines you’re on if they’re discussing Xarelto with you.
How Much Does Xarelto 15 mg Cost?
At the beginning of this guide, we said that Xarelto 15 mg is expensive. Since reading that, you’ve likely wondered, “How expensive is it?”
In some American pharmacies, a 30-day supply of Xarelto can reach as high as $575. That’s over $19 per pill.
Why Is It So Expensive?
It’s not a secret that the cost of healthcare is higher in the U.S. than in many developed countries. This includes the cost of medication.
There are many factors for this. The biggest reason Xarelto is as expensive as it is because there’re no generic.
You’ll often see it referred to as rivaroxaban. But rivaroxaban is the active ingredient in Xarelto. It’s not the generic name as far as medications go.
There isn’t even the possibility of a generic until 2024. That’s when Bayer AG / Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals’ Xarelto patent expires.
While healthcare costs, FDA control, and others all play a role, the fact Americans’ don’t have a generic option is crippling to many who need it.
To combat costs, people are turning to online pharmacies overseas to get the medications they need. Sadly, it opens desperate patients up to becoming victims of scams.
Many people aren’t aware that there isn’t a generic. Scammers prey on these unsuspecting patients and sell them the Xarelto “generic.”
Make no mistake, if you ever see a site claiming to sell the generic version of Xarelto — stay far away. As you now know, it’s impossible to sell something that doesn’t exist.
The good news is there are ways to save on Xarelto.
1.) Use Our Online Pharmacy Search
Protecting yourself from scams is of the utmost importance when it comes to buying medication online. But, it’s also important to us.
eDrugSearch thoroughly vets pharmacies on our site. Our process involves a rigorous verification process. Every Canadian pharmacy you see on eDrugSearch meets specific safety standards.
They also have valid and verified licenses and they’re all verified. When you find a Canadian pharmacy you’d like to buy from, you can rest assured you’re buying from a reputable source.
You can save up to 90% off your current brick-and-mortar pharmacy cost. You can also compare costs from several pharmacies using our eDrugSearch comparison tool.
Type in the drug you’re looking for and choose the dosage. You’ll find a list of safe pharmacies you can buy from.
Compare prices and read product descriptions, reviews, and the Q&A section. This ensures you’re definitely getting the lowest price possible. It will also give you an added peace of mind that your purchase is legitimate and safe.
Using our tool, you’ll find a one-month supply of Xarelto 15 mg for less than $100.
To save more money, click the Coupons tab. This will bring up any available Xarelto coupons which you can apply during the checkout process.
2.) Look for Xarelto Coupons
Coupons are another great way to save money on Xarelto. Along with any coupons you find using our search tool, manufacturers make coupons available for their customers.
You’ll find these in a couple of ways. First, you can look on Janssen Pharmaceuticals’ website. They may have them readily available for printing, or you may need to sign up for a newsletter.
If you do sign up for a newsletter, they could send you coupons periodically through your email or through the mail.
You can usually ask your doctor for coupons as well.
3.) Get a Sample from Your Doctor
Pharmaceutical companies send reps to doctors offices to drop off coupons, rebates, and samples.
In fact, before a physician prescribes a medication, they’ll give their patients a sample to see if it works. If you’re running into issues paying for Xarelto, ask your doctor for another sample.
If you have AFib and suddenly stop taking Xarelto, you can be at greater risk for developing a blood clot. You should never quit taking your medication without your doctor’s advice.
4.) Buy in Bulk and Split the Pills
When you using our search tool, you’ll find that you can buy higher quantities of Xarelto and in higher dosages.
Speak to your doctor about getting a prescription for a 60- or 90-day supply of Xarelto. If you can, you’ll save money doing so.
You can find a three-month supply of Xarelto for as little as $395. To put that in perspective, without insurance, a 30-day supply costs $575 at your local pharmacy.
Xarelto 20 mg is also available for the same quantities. For the cost of Xarelto 15 mg at your chain pharmacy, you can buy a 90-pill supply using our tool. Ask your doctor about buying a higher dosage and splitting the pills.
Note on Splitting Pills
Never make the decision to split pills without talking to your physician. In some cases, they may feel it’s a way you can save money. In other cases, they may not recommend it.
All pills aren’t suitable for splitting. Some drugs with coatings or ones you take more than once a day fit into this category. But, only your doctor should decide if Xarelto is suitable for splitting.
If you suffer from vision issues or problems with your fine motor skills, your doctor may not recommend you split pills either.
But, if your doctor gives you the go-ahead, you will find huge savings buying Xarelto in higher amounts.
5.) Prescription Assistance Programs
Due to the exorbitant cost of medication, there are several prescription assistance programs available.
Some, like Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are available through eligibility. If you’re on Medicaid or your children have CHIP, you’ll receive information on a patient assistance program for medication.
Another government-run program is the 340B Drug Pricing Program. This program makes medicine available for up to a 50% discount when bought through a participating facility’s pharmacy.
There are a few stipulations to this program, so make sure you visit their site for more info. You can also check the Partnership for Prescription Assistance website.
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services runs the program and it’s a valuable resource for finding financial assistance.
Some organizations, like AARP have a widely used — and accepted — program. If you’re a member of AARP, you, your spouse, and your dependents can save money on your prescriptions.
Your private insurance may also offer a discount drug program. Speak to your HR department or insurance representative to find out if you’re signed up for their program.
Janssen Pharmaceuticals is aware of how expensive Xarelto is. They also have their own cost assistance programs. After answering a few questions, they’ll suggest programs you qualify for.
6.) Review Your Insurance Formulary List
If you have private insurance, you likely found our suggestion to contact them about a patient assistance program helpful. But, they can provide you with more savings.
Insurance carries have formulary lists. These lists have the names of all the drugs your insurance company feels are necessities. These are drugs that they — along with a team of health care providers — deem necessary as part of treatment.
All insurance companies have a formulary list. But, they do change so make sure you check yours often.
Some companies have mail order programs. For example, if you need a medicine on the formulary list, you may pay a very low cost and the insurance carrier will ship it to you.
Start Saving Today
The cost of Xarelto, like many medications, is out of reach for millions of Americans. In fact, people abandon over 110 million prescriptions at pharmacies every year. One in five doesn’t even make it to the pharmacy.
Not taking your Xarelto all of a sudden is dangerous. Don’t ever abandon your script or throw it away.
You have options! And we’re here to guide you through them.
Start by logging onto eDrugSearch. Type in Xarelto, then choose the proper dosage. Review the results, check for coupons, and compare pharmacies.
