What Is Dulera?
The drug is relatively new to the market and received FDA approval in June 2010. The FDA partially based its support on two randomized trials featuring 1,509 patients over 12 years of age with asthma that did not respond to inhaled corticosteroids.
Both trials showed that Dulera inhalers produced significant improvements in lung function compared to the baseline and compared to the use of corticosteroids alone.
Why is Dulera different from other asthma treatments? Other asthma control methods use either corticosteroids or long-acting beta2-agonists.
Dulera uses both in the same prescription.
Together, these two drugs work to tackle the two primary characteristics of asthma: inflammation and muscle contraction around your airways. Corticosteroids relieve the inflammation occurring in the lungs, and the beta2-agonist relaxes the muscles to prevent asthma attacks from becoming fatal.
Things to Know About Dulera
The inhaler is suitable for people 12 years and older.
Some of the common side effects of Dulera inhalers include:
- Dry mouth
- Sinus pain
- Stuffy nose
- Sore through
Other side effects include:
- Skin rash
- Back pain
- Muscle cramps
- Changes in menstrual periods
Finally, Dulera is not a rescue inhaler.
Patients use it to control and prevent symptoms to stop asthma attacks before they start. Doctors prescribe Dulera inhalers for this purpose because the prescription proved successful in studies of asthma patients.
Reasons for Prescribing Dulera
Doctors prescribe Dulera for patients who tried to control their asthma with another control medicine like low to medium dose inhaled corticosteroids but didn’t find success. Patients who manage their asthma successfully this way do not qualify for Dulera.
Instead, Dulera is specifically for patients (over 12) whose asthma requires help from both the corticosteroid and the long-acting beta2-agonist.
In one study, a cohort of patients used Dulera for six months while another used the two drugs in it on their one either taking mometasone furoate or formoterol on their own or taking a placebo.
The results showed that 70 percent of patients that received Dulera went six months without an asthma flare-up. The next best group was the patients taking mometasone furoate alone at 66 percent followed by 46 percent of patients who received formoterol on its own.
Those patients who took a placebo inhaler came in last with 44 percent of patients avoiding a flare-up during the study.
Additionally, the use of long-acting beta2-agonists on its own is related to an increase of severe asthma problems and risk of both hospitalization and death. When used with corticosteroids, there is no increase. However, you still need to seek emergency medical care if you suffer from breathing problems that your rescue inhaler does not alleviate.
Seven Ways to Save Money on Your Dulera Inhaler
Dulera inhalers do wonders for asthma patients who don’t find relief from inhalers featuring only corticosteroids. Unfortunately, Dulera, like many other inhalers, is expensive. The costs add up quickly because unlike other prescriptions, those who receive a prescription for Dulera will likely use it for most of their life.
We understand the burden that asthma places on your finances – and help is available. We’ll show you how to cust Dulera cost down to a price that makes the most sense for your finances.
1.) Perform a Price Comparison
Inhalers are essential for those diagnosed with asthma, but they are also unfortunately expensive, particularly considering it is a long-term medication with daily dosage recommendations.
That’s why it’s so important to find out whether your pharmacy offers you the best possible price on your prescription.
Start saving money on your inhaler by first identifying the real cost. Your local pharmacy may not buy many Dulera inhalers, or their overhead costs may send the cost of medication sky-high. It’s hard to know what wholesale cost of the prescription is when you only ask for one price.
Our online pharmacy features a price comparison tool that compares dozens of pharmacies carrying Dulera. The tool breaks down each offer according to essential features like:
- Pharmacy name
- Total price
- Price per pill
Using our tool, you’ll see roughly how much your inhaler costs per inhalation. For example, if your doctor prescribes two puffs per day – the average dosage – and you one 200 mcg inhaler for $150, then you’ll spend $1.25 per 5 mcg inhalation or $2.50 per dosage.
A quick scroll through the list will show you pharmacies that offer a price per inhalation ranging from $0.97 to $1.95 with most prices hovering around $1.65.
You’ll start to see the real difference between the price of the inhaler and the actual cost very quickly.
Don’t Forget to Read Reviews
Did you find a price you like? Check out reviews of the online pharmacies to learn more about the provider.
Just as your corner pharmacy differs from a superstore pharmacy, so too do online pharmacies. By reading reviews, you’ll learn more about shipping, available coupons, and what customers truly think about their purchasing experience.
These reviews help our visitors decide whether buying the cheapest inhaler will ultimately cost them more than if they spent an extra few dollars.
2.) Apply a Promo Code
Coupons and promo codes are simple ways to save money that require little effort and even less math.
Once you find a price that matches your budget and a pharmacy that meets your needs, see if you can’t save a little more by using a coupon or promo code.
These are hard to come by in traditional pharmacies because they often fail to match either the dosage prescribed or they feature limited availability. However, our price comparison tool does more than show you the price per inhalation. It also tracks every available promo code for the pharmacies carrying your prescription.
On top of the price comparison chart, you’ll see a toolbar with a “Coupons” tab. Click the tab to find out about new coupons offered by the pharmacy.
Some pharmacies offer the chance to save 5% just by using a promo code. Other pharmacies pass on the savings to you when you use a less-costly payment method like a money order. Sharing a pharmacy may earn you $25 off your purchase.
Every little bit helps, and the promo codes you find the site won’t come with restrictions.

3.) Go Generic (Usually)
In many cases, we recommend hunting down a generic form of your prescription. While this is good advice, there is not currently a generic form of Dulera on the market.
The generic drugs in Dulera are the corticosteroids and long-acting beta2-agonists, but you won’t find the combination medication in any other form.
4.) Ask for a Sample
Want to start with a free Dulera inhaler? New patients can download a free trial offer from the Dulera manufacturer’s website. They can then take it into a participating pharmacy.
You’ll need a valid prescription for the offer, and not all pharmacies accept the offer. Additionally, not all patients can participate. The full terms and conditions of Dulera’s offer are here.
5.) Ask for a Competing Inhaler
Dulera isn’t the only inhaler on the market that uses two different medications to target difficult cases of asthma. Other inhalers include
6.) Get Your Insurance Company Involved
Is the cost of your Dulera inhaler too high even with insurance? It may be because your insurance company doesn’t prioritize Dulera.
If you have a private health insurance plan, then your insurer governs the prescriptions you can and can’t access according to its drug formulary list.
Your insurer’s drug formulary list features the drugs the company is happy to help pay for. There will be two lists: drugs fully covered and those only partially covered.
Why do insurance companies segment lists like this? Insurers know more about health care costs than efficacy. So, each company puts together a committee of pharmacists, therapeutics specialists, and physicians to create lists of drugs that are safe, effective, and affordable.
The lists are tiered so that an insurer can make sure that you try all the low-cost and effective options before going for an expensive or less effective alternative. Cheap drugs, like corticosteroids, fall in the bottom tier because they’re generic, inexpensive, and useful across the board. Because they fall in the lowest level, you’ll pay the least for these.
Prescription inhalers like Dulera may end up in a higher tier because doctors tend to try corticosteroids first before prescribing Dulera or another type of inhaler.
Tiered prescription lists sound complicated – and they are. But it’s another good reason to get in touch with your insurer if you believe that Dulera is the right prescription for you. Your insurer might prioritize another inhaler that may be as effective for you.
When you know what your insurance company prefers, you can back to your doctor in an attempt to figure out a happy medium. Alternatively, you can adjust your plan to cover more of your prescription drug costs and stick with the inhaler you prefer.
7.) Make Sure You Use Your Inhaler Correctly
If you’re new to using your inhaler, make sure you get a demo from your doctor or pharmacist to ensure you use it correctly.
Using it the right way ensures you’re taking the dose you need – no more and no less. Taking too big a breath uses up more of the medication, which means you’ll need a new inhaler faster.
Are you having a difficult time getting the right dose? Ask your doctor if you would benefit from using a spacer. Spacers help you get all the medication you need with the first breath, which saves you from giving it a second attempt and wasting medication.
Lower Your Dulera Cost and Breathe Easier
Have you tried Dulera and finally found an inhaler that works? Unfortunately, inhalers are expensive, but our guide to saving money should help you cut your Dulera cost dramatically.
If your doctor prescribed Dulera, it’s essential to use it according to your physician and pharmacists’ instructions. You shouldn’t skip doses when you feel better or to try to save money. Your preventative prescription dramatically lowers the risk of severe asthma attacks in the near future.
Skipping a dose always costs more than you think it will.
Instead, do your homework. Use our price comparison tool to find a price that works for you and make sure you use your inhaler correctly to avoid buying more than you need.
Managing your asthma improves your overall health, so use your inhaler like the valuable gift it is.
