According to the National Institute of Health, acne is the most prevalent skin disease in the United States. While it is most common among teenagers and young adults, acne can occur at any age.
Many acne medications can be prescribed, but did you know there is one natural acne treatment that could be growing in your garden?
The human body contains pores, which are small holes in the skin. Pores are connected to oil glands under the skin by canals called follicles.
Dead skin cells travel up through the follicles to the skin’s surface. However, when a follicle clogs, a pimple forms on the skin’s surface.
Acne is not a dangerous condition but it can be embarrassing, uncomfortable, and even painful. Severe acne can even leave permanent scars.
Tomato as Natural Acne Treatment
Many acne treatments exist, but most of them are expensive and may cause side effects. Tomatoes are inexpensive, natural, and effective for treating acne. According to Home Remedies for Life, tomatoes close pores, which prevents dirt, bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells from plugging them.
The fruit contains vitamins A, C, E, K, B1, B2, B3, and B6, which help nourish skin and shrink pores. Tomatoes also contain salicylic acid, which is an ingredient commonly found in commercial acne products. Salicylic acid balances the skin’s pH level and cleanses and exfoliates the skin, removing toxins from the pores.
The fruit also helps heal skin damage on a cellular level, reducing the appearance of acne scars as well. Furthermore, the iron and potassium tomatoes contain support healthy skin and reduce scar formation.
3 Ways to Use Tomatoes as Natural Acne Remedies
If you want to reap the benefits of tomatoes for treating acne, try using some of these simple tips from Health Guidance.
1.) The “Quick Fix”
This natural remedy isn’t as effective as some of the others listed below, but it may be effective for minor acne breakouts. Cut a tomato in half, and rub the cut side of the fruit on your skin where you have acne.
Massage the fruit’s juice into your skin for a few seconds before rinsing it off with some warm water.
2.) Tomato Face Mask
If you have more time, you can make a tomato paste face mask that works well on serious acne breakouts. Cut an X into the top of a tomato, and rinse it under warm water for one to two minutes.
Start at the top of the tomato, and peel its skin off. Next, remove the tomato’s seeds. Make a tomato paste by mashing up the rest of the tomato, and put the paste all over your face.
Leave the paste on for an hour before thoroughly rinsing it off. Adding cucumber or yogurt to the tomato paste will help relieve painful acne.
3.) Tomato Juice Spot Treatment
Don’t like the idea of sitting with tomato on your face for a full hour? This spot treatment may be worth a try. Mix a few drops of lemon juice with one tablespoon of tomato juice in a small bowl.
Use a cotton ball to apply the mixture to the acne on your skin. Leave the mixture on for five minutes before thoroughly rinsing it off.
Though acne is not medically dangerous, it can be embarrassing, disfiguring, and painful. Tomatoes are an inexpensive and effective way to treat acne breakouts and reduce the appearance of scars.
