Is Nutella Good for You?
Despite having recently reached “hipster status” in the culinary world, Nutella contains some dark secrets when it comes to its list of ingredients.
As it turns out, Nutella is anything but healthy. To make matters worse, the company recently lost a $3 million class action lawsuit because of its misleading advertising.
For years, Nutella has wanted you to believe that the gooey, rich and sweet spread is healthy. However, that could not be farther from the truth.
What Is Nutella Made Of?
If you aren’t an expert when it comes to nutrition, you might not see anything wrong with the ingredients written on the back of a jar of Nutella.
Here’s what those ingredients are:
- Palm Oil
- Skim Milk
- Soy Lecithin
There are people who mistakenly believe that because the list of ingredients is fairly short that somehow the spread is better for them.
Additionally, at first glance, these ingredients don’t look so bad at all. However, it’s time to take a closer look at what goes into Nutella.
The first ingredient of Nutella is sugar. In fact, Nutella contains lots of sugar. Just two tablespoons of the spread gives the body 21 grams of sugar…That’s like eating a whole Kit Kat bar!
Nutella has been marketed as a spread to enjoy with breakfast. The problem is that having this much sugar first thing in the morning can lead to a dangerous spike in blood sugar.
To make matters worse, the type of sugar used in Nutella is refined white sugar which is about as processed as it gets.
Like hazelnuts, cocoa is not an ingredient that is harmful.
Vanillin is another dangerous ingredient. It’s a chemical or artificial flavor that imitates the flavor of vanilla and is full of MSG.
It’s heavily processed and has been linked to headaches and seizures because of its high level of neurotoxins and is super-addictive.
Palm oil, the second ingredient, contains a high level of saturated fat that can lead to serious health problems like high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease.
The fact that it’s the second ingredient means that each serving of Nutella loads your body up with this fat. To make matters worse, the palm oil industry is doing incredible damage to our environment by destroying rainforests.
Hazelnuts are loaded with protein and healthy fats and are therefore the least problematic ingredient in Nutella. Of course, hazelnuts are the third ingredient on the list which means that each serving of the spread contains more sugar and palm oil than it does hazelnuts.
While the skim milk powder in Nutella isn’t doing the body any harm, it is perhaps contributing to its misleading reputation as a healthy spread.
By incorporating skim milk into the recipe, people believe that they are consuming a product that is low in fat. Of course, this could not be farther from the truth.
Perhaps the worst offender on the list of ingredients, soy lecithin has recently been linked to numerous health problems. For one thing, a study has shown that soy lecithin can disrupt thyroid and endocrine hormone production.
This ingredient can also dramatically boost estrogen levels, potentially leading to health problems like breast cancer. Plus, soy lecithin has been linked to obesity.
As you can see, Nutella is anything but healthy. It’s simply another sugary spread that offers no serious nutritional value. If you love the flavor of Nutella but don’t want to expose your body to these toxic chemicals, you can make your own.
Simply grind up some hazelnuts, cocoa powder, honey and milk in a food processor and create a healthy, nutrient-rich spread for you and your family to enjoy.
