History of Fluoridated Water

The story of fluoridated water goes back over 100 years ago to a small town in the mountain of Colorado. Generations of children born there developed brown stains on their teeth. No one could figure out why. But it become so common the local people called it the “Colorado brown stain”.

After much investigation by dentists and scientists, the mystery was finally solved around 1910. The brown coloring was coming from the drinking water that had high levels of fluoride. The fluoride had filtered into the water from local aluminum mines.

Although their stained teeth looked unsightly, the children had almost no cavities. Dental experts lowered the fluoride levels to eliminate the staining, but the teeth remained cavity resistant.

When this news spread across the country, many communities began adding limited amounts of fluoride to their drinking water.

Fluoridated Water Today

There is a lot of conversation today about the negative effects of fluoridated water on our health. There have always been skeptics who questioned the benefits of adding fluoride to drinking water. The issue is now being discussed worldwide.

Since fluoride is found in many bottled water products, it’s important that people who drink bottled water regularly know the facts.

Experts have long argued about whether or not fluoride in drinking water is toxic to humans. Recent studies reveal that there is evidence that it can be toxic. Extra high levels of fluoride in drinking water have been linked as cause of neurotoxicity in adults. This affects our memory and learning ability negatively.

Both the Harvard School of Public Health and the China Medical University in Shenyang have found that there are strong indications that fluoride also has an adverse effect on children’s cognitive learning development.

Today nearly 70% of public water in the United States is artificially fluoridated. Regardless of age or health, fluoride accumulates in the body. Fluoride is often believed to help prevent tooth decay. But research has actually found that there is no significant relationship between tooth decay and fluoride intake among children.

In fact, many children are being overexposed to fluoride. This can lead to a problem called dental fluorosis, a discoloring of tooth enamel caused by excessive amounts of fluoride; see picture below.

There are numerous risks to good health from drinking fluoridate water. If can affect our oral health, brain functions, and damage pineal gland. According to the Journal of Epidemiological & Community Health, fluoride can also affect our thyroid function which can lead to obesity and depression.

Health Effects of Plastic Water Bottles

It’s important to know that all plastic bottled water has an impact on health and the environment. Over 67 million plastic water bottles are used and discarded every day around the world. As you know, these non-biodegradable bottles cause excessive waste buildup at dumps.

Health Effects of Plastic Water Bottles

According to Dr. Mercola, drinking from plastic bottles can cause these health issues:

  • obesity
  • diabetes
  • fertility problems
  • altered immune systems
  • premature puberty in girls
  • prostate and breast cancer
  • learning and behavioral issues

These plastic water bottles often contain:

  • Cancer-causing PFOAs
  • Flame retardant chemicals known as PBDEs.
  • Dangerous plasticizing chemicals known as phthalates.
  • BPA (bisphenol A), which is an estrogen-mimicking chemical that is found in plastic bottles

Safest Bottles for Drinking Water

Now that most manufacturers have started to create BPA-free water bottles you have nothing to worry about, right?

WRONG! Men’s Journal says, a BPA-free water bottle could be just as toxic as your old BPA-rich Nalgene. So these new BPA-free bottles contain other chemicals that are still toxic and are found leaching into your water.

The safest way to go is drinking from a glass bottle, stainless steel bottle or drinking water from a copper vessel. Here are a few of my top choices you can buy on Amazon:

You’ll notice I didn’t recommend using any aluminum bottles because many manufacturers often use sketchy construction techniques, they include plastic BPA liners, the bottle easily dents and they are difficult to clean.
