It’s summer again, but all that fun in the sun could result in dreaded age spots instead of a healthy tan.
“Everybody’s got them: old, young, middle-aged, men and women,” explains Drew from YouTube’s Fitlife channel.
We all know what age spots are. Those unattractive little brown spots that show up on our face, hands, and all the other exposed parts of our bodies after we spend time out in the sun—an unwanted sign of aging.
We can all get them if we spend allot of time in the sun, but they mostly appear on adults older than 50. You’ve probably noticed sun spots on your own skin around July or August.
Why Do We Get Age Spots?
Ultraviolet rays from the sun cause age spots—also known as liver spots. The Mayo Clinic explains that the body’s natural response to sun exposure and these ultraviolet rays is to produce melanin as the skin tans, as a defense to protect the deeper layers under the surface of the skin.
The parts of your body that get the most time in the sun will show the most age spots, typically your face, shoulders, hands, and arms. Most of these dark spots are perfectly harmless, but there are certain warning signs to watch out for.
If some of them are a lot darker than the others, grow at a very quick rate, have irregular shaped borders, are red, sore when touched, or bleed, you should see a doctor ASAP.
How Can We Get Rid of Age Spots?
Regardless of how harmless these blemishes are, most of us do not want to look at them each time we glance at our reflection. In the video below Drew talks about a method to get rid of our unwanted age spots.
Dr. Doug Willen, D.C. NYC nutrition expert and author of Quantum Paleo, has developed a way to remove sun spots with two simple ingredients most of us already have in our kitchen.
Onions and apple cider vinegar! “This remedy might not be an overnight fix,” says Drew, “but it’s extremly effective.“
There are many uses for onions because they are sulfur-rich vegetables, that help fight cancer, boost anti-oxidant and help detox your liver–making the humble onion, one tasty and super-powered vegetable!
Apple cider vinegar has been treasured since 400 B.C when Hippocrates first discovered the natural anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties that can used to remove skin tags and treat other skin conditions like acne, eczema, and age spots.
How to Remove Age Spots Naturally
- Peel an onion, dice it, and put the pieces in a plastic bag.
- Use a heavy object like a rolling pin to crush the onion and bring out the juices. (Another option is to puree the onion in a food processor.)
- Blend onion mush with 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar in a blender until thoroughly combined.
Apply this mixture directly to age spots with a cotton ball or clean washcloth. Drew recommends using this solution each day for best results.
You’ll see improvement in about 3 weeks.
Why Does This Natural Remedy for Age Spots Work?
Onions have an antioxidant that works to neutralize free radicals in the skin and encourages healing in the epidermis. The apple cider vinegar has alpha-hydroxy acid that exfoliates the outer layer of dead skin. This combination is highly effective in removing age spots.
How Can Age Spots Be Prevented?
Yes, they can! Using sunscreen to shield your skin from the everyday effects of the sun is the best way to prevent age spots. An article in Harpers Bazaar by Dr. Ray Peat, PhD, states that hormones and diet can contribute to these blemishes, suggesting we eliminate polyunsaturated fats in our diet and make sure we don’t consume too much iron.
