"New" Grains To Eat |

Here are a few "new" grains that are really quite old ones but are becoming popular lately because they are "super" grains and can be used to replace wheat and rice. The grains are amaranth, chia, quinoa, and spelt.
These grains are "greener" because they are easier to grow. Spelt is naturally more resistant to disease and pests than wheat, so it grows with 1/3-less nitrogen fertilizer. Amaranth can be grown without irrigation, unlike water-loving grains such as corn and rice.
A serving of chia has about 16% of your average daily protein intake. And people who are allergic to gluten in wheat can usually eat amaranth, chia, and quinoa with no problem.
All the grains can be found in stores, but if you don't see them, just ask the store manager to get them in because they are really tasty. I have had amaranth, spelt and quinoa so far and will try chia as soon as I get the idea of eating chia pets out of my head! |

You mean my Chia Pet could have been dinner??? All this time, I never knew.
I have had quinoa, it was pretty tasty. But I bought amaranth teething biscuits for my baby, MAN were those things GROSS |

Quinoa is great for making mini pizza discs-that was always my favourite way of serving it. The others I haven't tried but will look out for since I have a currently very restricted diet. |

I've never heard of any of those. And quite frankly our supermarkets are not interested in getting products in that we the customers want. I've been asking for salt free selections to virtually everything and we have yet to get more than 5 or 10 items that are salt free. Its difficult trying to get away from all the crap they put in our food today. |
