I always make sure I have some handy. I can't remember the brand name but my mom always called it "drawing salve". It works great for splinters.

My mom had this and still does even though all of the kids have long since moved away. The kind she has is "petro-carbo" and I remember a lot of splinters coming out with it as I grew up. |

How does this salve work? I can't think of a single reason why putting salve on the skin would cause a splinter to come out on its on. |

We use it too. Here it's called "draw out salve" and it works great on stubborn splinters, especially in children where you don't want to dig them out with a needle.

I've never heard of this, although I've always had a tub of Bag Balm on hand. A quick search turns up that it is 20% Ichthammol salve also called Black Salve, Black Drawing Salve, Drawout Salve, and Bear Grease. Seems to be used to draw out boils, bug and spider bites and splinters. At $3-5 a tube its pretty cheap compared to Neosporin. |

Yes drawing salve. I don't have any but my mom still does. I can remember using this when I was a child. It worked wonderful- It was really gross though. Black and thick- like tar... but it pulled out slivers.

i still make salve too.
Petro carbo works great on wood splinters and to help draw out glass. put it n before hot bath and the sliver slides right out.
I know wfew store sthat sell all those rosebud salve, and farmers stil use it. Watkins has some awsome vanilla and mint salve.
Its the recursor to the twist up sticks.
