I have taken Benadryl many times for insect bites that cause swelling such as those from scorpions, bees, and wasps. I am very allergic to bee stings and begin swelling almost immediately after being stung. Once taken, the relief is immediate. I have also used it when deep sea fishing to prevent motion sickness. The only side effect that I have experienced is drowsiness. However they now have non-drowsy dosages which I would highly recommend, especially if you want to be awake the rest of the day. Although I have only experienced drowsiness, I read that some other side effects are motor impairment, dry mouth and throat, flushed skin, rapid or irregular heartbeat, and blurred vision.

Pill form takes a while to take effect. Liquid benadryl is much better for severe allergic reactions to things like hives, shellfish, weezing, bug bites, etc.

I have taken benedryl since I was a small child for seasonal and pet allergies. It was a regular thing as a child, not so much now as an adult. It works really well, but it also knocks me out. I cannot take it if I have anything to do in the next several hours. It is more effective at making me sleep than sleeping pills are.
